When taking photographs with a studio set you must have a background, lighting and props. As you create the set you need to be aware that lighting is one of then most important things you need in order to take a correctly exposed photograph. To begin setting up you will have to chose where you want to take the photograph. You will then need to put a background up, this could either be a curtain or a diffuser tent.
This is a diagram of a three piece studio lighting set up. It has two lights at in front of the model with a large soft box acting as the main source of light. There is also a third light behind the model, this will make the model look as though there is a gap behind them and the background.
The different types of equiptment are used for different purposes eg.
A "soft box" is an enclosure around a bulb comprising reflective side and back walls and a diffusing material at the front of the light. The sides and back of the box are lined with a bright surface - an aluminized fabric surface or an aluminum foil, to act as an efficient reflector. In some commercially available models the diffuser is removable to allow the light to be used alone as a floodlight or with an umbrella reflector. A soft box can be used with either flash or continuous light sources such as fluorescent lamps or "hot lights" such as quartz halogen bulbs or tungsten bulbs. If soft box lights are used with 'hot' light sources, the user must be sure the soft box is heat rated for the wattage of the light it is attached to in order to avoid fire hazard.
Studio lighting is usually used for photoshoots, this is for capturing a soft and even effect of lighting on the area that you are taking a photograph of.
